Our brand and design partner for the launch of the museum, Glasgow-based creative studio Tangent, won the Gold Award for Brand Identity – Civic at the 2024 Scottish Design Awards for their work with us on the new Perth Museum brand. The project was also shortlisted in the hotly contested Design Excellence category, while their campaign design for our debut exhibition Unicorn was also nominated in the Campaign Design category.
When the new Perth Museum opened in March 2024, the team chose to centre local LGBTQ+ stories and voices in its first exhibition, Unicorn. As part of an exploration of Scotland’s national animal, the exhibition focuses on the unicorn as a LGBTQ+ symbol. Working in collaboration with community groups, the exhibition includes 5 newly-commissioned artworks by queer Scottish artists, local objects and oral histories, a queer-friendly family space, and a rich engagement programme.
Unicorn has not only increased representation of LGBTQ+ communities in the museum’s displays but also in its collections by accessioning objects, artworks and oral histories generated through the exhibition. Moreover, the museum has embedded new staff training to ensure it continues to be a welcoming and empowering place for queer workers and visitors alike.
Unicorn has been a critical and commercial success, and has created a safe, relevant and celebratory space for LGBTQ+ people in Perthshire. The exhibition attracted 10,000 visitors and generated £50,000 in ticket sales in the first four months, and enjoyed a five-star review from the Guardian. Through Unicorn, Perth Museum has challenged the assumption that discursive, sector-leading work can only happen in big museums and cities.
The Scottish Property Awards was founded in 2014 and aims to recognise the best new commercial and public buildings in Scotland. The independent competition is judged by a panel of experts drawn from across the sector, bringing together industry experience and market knowledge to recognise the greatest achievements in the built environment across Scotland.
The Scottish Property Awards 2025 winners were announced on Thursday 20 February 2025 at the Doubletree by Hilton, Glasgow Central. Perth Museum won in the Small Regeneration Project of the Year category.
Goodson Associates was appointed in 2017 to provide full Civil and Structural Design for the redevelopment of the Grade B listed c.1908 Perth City Hall Building. The project included working alongside Perth & Kinross Council and HUB East Central on a Marque Project for the local community.
These proposals cover the whole city centre redevelopment including public realm works, the introduction of a new feature vennel through the existing building, major building structural alterations, a three-storey pavilion exhibition space, introduction of new lifts and relevelling of existing feature balconies areas to create new gallery areas. We additionally provided input on the unique showcase features within the museum including Pictish standing stones and the nationally significant Stone of Destiny.
Working with Olivia Rickman Communications we were able to tailor pitches and offer exclusive trips, creating deep engagement with the media, and successfully building excitement for the opening of Perth Museum. Thanks to Olivia, we were able to achieve a remarkable breadth and depth of coverage, from arts-focused features to international architecture stories. The coverage drove exceptional results, smashing targets for visitors and establishing the museum as a major cultural landmark, boosting footfall and local pride. Also nominated for Best Piece of Coverage – Travel
